Federal Election 2022 — Women for united action on climate change now!

April 2022: Election time is here and the WCC has developed key messages for pollies and candidates. WCC is bringing women’s voices to the fore to lead the call for strong action on climate change from all those elected to office, whichever party or community they represent.

Women’s issues and climate action are driving the coming election.
We implore our elected representatives to set aside combative politics, to put aside judgement and blame, and to focus instead on creating a safe future for the children of today and future generations.

Join us to influence the outcomes of this most important election.

Key messages

Why it’s time for climate action

  • The IPCC has signalled a ‘code red’ for humankind in terms of widespread extreme weather events.

  • We have only 8 years to get policies in place to ensure that by 2030 we are on track for transition to climate balance.

  • Political inaction on climate change has gone on too long and is hurting us all. A profound cultural shift is needed to break the political deadlock on climate action.

Why it’s time for women to lead the way

  • Women and children are the worst affected in times of crises and emergencies but the historical dominance of men in parliament means that the policy agenda does not reflect issues of importance to women.

  • History has shown that when women act together in times of peril, they have developed visionary plans.

  • It’s time to work together across all political parties, with compassion and deep listening, to safeguard life on Earth for generations to come.

  • We need diversity in leadership, including gender diversity, to promote imaginative solutions to secure a safe climate future.

What you can do during the campaign

  • Talk with your friends and colleagues about why it’s time for women to lead action on climate change.

  • Get to know your local candidates (including your current elected representative).

    • Write and ask them to work together on climate action. Get your friends to do this too. Arrange to meet them if you can.

    • You can use our template letter (see below) or write your own.

    • Get your friends to write letters as well. Some people find it supportive to gather and write letters at the same time.

    • We have members in most federal electorates and can put you in touch with other WCC members in your area.

    • We can support you to arrange and conduct meetings.

  • Share our messages on social media (see below for link to our social media kit).

In your writing, social media and meetings, model the values that we are calling for of listening, collaboration, compassion and prioritising the Earth and future generations.

What you can do at voting time

  • Vote for candidates who advocate for urgent climate action.

  • Vote for candidates who say they will work with other parties for united national action on climate change.

  • If possible, Vote 1 for women.
